Good vs God
She awoke to her youngest child panicked, crying out, "I'm sick Mom! I'm sick!" This was just one more unexpected to add to the list. She silently prays in desperation at one more thing to add to her plate. The already full schedule for the day unravels before her eyes. One, then another, and another; they all drop like flies to whatever has ailed her children. She began a large pot of chicken soup to soothe tummies and soon the smell of disinfectant mingled with the aroma of roasting chicken within the house. After the lid has set down on another load of laundry, she breaks down in her moment of solitude to pray again. This is just one more moment in a long series of unfortunate events attempting to stop her. As she realizes her life is starting to sound like a bad country song, a small group video from Matt Fry's website came to mind. His phrase struck home: is it God or is it Good?
One thing she has noticed: sometimes God choices are not met with immediate blessings. Sometimes, knowing the difference in having made a good choice vs a God choice can be based off of how many hurdles have been thrown into the path chosen. The closer she strives to become closer to God and do his will, the harder the devil works to distract and overwhelm.
Often in life we are met with forks in the road, or choices. Sometimes those choices can all be GOOD and beneficial possibilities. What differentiates the choice God is leading you to take vs other choices isn't easy without specific prayer and the patience to listen. How do we know we've made God's choice over our own? It's hard to tell isn't It? We often think of following Jesus as being showered with blessings out of our obedience. More often than not, hardships, instead, may be the abundance, in the face of obedience.
"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness." James 1:2-3
So when you surrender all to Christ, only to find every stick thrown into your path, have faith in the knowledge that sometimes choosing God over Good looks ugly for a while. Take heart if you face trials in your obedience that you are not alone!
"For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing to the glory that is to be revealed to us." Romans 8:18.
